William L. Smith returned his light and energy to the universe on Saturday, August 5, 2017. He was 56. He died peacefully at his home following a lengthy illness.
William was born in Haynesville, La., grew up in Springhill, La. and lived in New Orleans for the past 30 years. He earned an associate degree with honors from Delgado Community College in 2000 and associate degrees in computer technology and graphics design from Remington College in 2003 and 2005. He worked as a hair stylist, visual designer for JCPenney, fashion consultant, interior designer and landscape designer. He enjoyed using his creativity to make life more fun.
William was a volunteer for Project Lazarus and once received their volunteer of the year award. He was a member of the New Orleans Radical Faeries and a former member of the New Orleans Gay Men’s Chorus.
William was known for his electric blue eyes, his impish personality and his dry wit. He was always looking for ways to brighten everyone’s day with a smile, a wink or one of his jokes.
Survivors include R. Daniel Gamble, his partner of 34 years, his mother Earline Dowden of Springhill, La., his sister Martha (Gary) Vining of Haughton, La. and numerous nieces and nephews. William was preceded in death by his father William E. Smith, his stepfather James W. Dowden and his sister Linda Mulkey.
Special thanks go to Ms. Alison Berryhill and Ms. Courtney Morgan for the exceptional care they provided.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, August 26, 2017 at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Hall Summit, La.
