Walter Lewis Ashton, Jr. born on July 27, 1922 in East Brewton, AL. Died on December 13, 2018 in New Orleans, LA. He was preceded in death by his parents Walter Lewis Ashton, Sr. and Alma Scott Ashton, his wife of 57 years Rita Louise Shuck Ashton, his sister Gladys Ashton Mashburn, his brother Jackson Augustus Ashton, and grandson David Allen Ashton, Jr. He is survived by his sons, Mark Scott Ashton (Trish), David Allen Ashton Sr. (Patsy), and Patrick Gregory Ashton (Karma), as well as his daughters Sara Ashton Murphy (John), Sylvia Ashton Bellone (Chris), and Marie Ashton Gage (Tom). H is also survived by his grandchildren Zachary and John Bellone, Eric, Amy, and Julie Ashton, Meredith and Kevin Gage, and great grandsons Theodore and Desmond Ashton-Shaw, and Colby Bellone.
Services will be held at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, LA. Visitation will be on Sunday, December 16, 2018, from 4:00 P.M. ~ until 6:00 P.M. and on Monday, December 17, 2018, from 9:00 A.M. ~ 11:00 A.M. with a Funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. Interment to follow in St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Heart Association or a charity of your choice. A special thanks to Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care and Notre Dame Hospice Care Staff for their blessed care given during his last days and also the Lambeth House Staff where he previously resided.
Born in the rural area of East Brewton, Alabama he was raised as a child of The Great Depression. He graduated with a BS in Engineering from University of Alabama during WWII. He served during the war in the Army Corps of Engineers in the Pacific Theater on Saipan Island during the push toward Japan. He built roads as well as repaired the airfields and the hospital during the island hopping campaign in the Pacific. His decorations included the Meritorious Service Medal.
After the war, he was building bridges in the St Louis area when he met the love of his life Rita Schuck when she was working off-air at KMOX radio. They were married in April 1948 and were together for 57 years.
The young couple moved to New Orleans when Walter accepted a job at Curtis and Davis before going into business for himself as a consulting engineer. Walter and Rita were devoted members of Mater Dolorosa Church in New Orleans, St Ann Church and Shrine in Metairie, and St. John the Baptist in Folsom.
