Tribute

Joyce Alvetta Probst Porter was born on July 11, 1930 and passed away on Mother's Day May 13, 2018. She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren and was at peace at her passing. She was only 39 years old!! Of course she had been 39 since her daughter was 10! She died on Mother's day so that none of us would ever forget the day again. I could list names of all her family and friends but that would not celebrate a great woman in the manner she should be. Her kids, Kelley, Shane and Wayne were her agony and ecstasy. Yes, she had four beautiful granddaughters and one very cool grandson, one great grandson and one great granddaughter: Heather, Meghan, Kathleen, Alex, Taylor, Shay, and Hunter. She would kill me if she knew I published her middle name, Alvetta. Mom was an amazing woman, she gave more than she received. She was a kick ass bowler who regularly beat the male bowlers at Bowlarama and everywhere she traveled. She loved to be with family and friends for a good game of cards or most importantly Scrabble. Most people did not stand a chance except those who cheated a little bit (Meghan and Hunter)! She would not let you get away with anything but always forgave and said "It's OK' we are all just having fun. She hated to fight but loved a good argument. She turned a one WOMAN business, Probst Decorating, into a million dollar interior design firm in New Orleans that was an institution for generations of homeowners. She was tough, loyal, caring, cool and giving. Many amazing people were trained and aided by her beautiful nature over the years. She hired friends of the kids just because and gave them a career not just a job. She loaned money to her "adopted kids" aka friends, to buy their first home or just to help them out in a tough time. She adopted a friend of her daughter's because she lived in an orphanage. She bailed more than one employee out of jail because they needed guidance and help. No matter how hard you worked, she worked harder and longer. She was your best ally and toughest critic. There will be many who will remember her for what she built, almost singlehanded, but we will always remember her for being the toughest damn broad we will ever know. I will miss her until the day I die, she was my mom and my best friend and I will never forget the sacrifices she made for us all.
