Joyce Teresa Johnson

Our family and friends have lost the very best aunt that anyone could ever have. With sadness, love, and profound gratitude, we announce the passing of Joyce Teresa Johnson on July 24, 2022, at the age of 91. She was known to all who knew her as “Aunt” Joyce, as she made everyone feel welcome, doted on, and loved. She radiated happiness, joy, and loving kindness wherever she went.

Joyce, a lifelong resident of New Orleans, was predeceased by her parents, Charles Henry Johnson, Sr. and Florence Weir Johnson. Joyce worked for South Central Bell and its successors until she retired. When not at work, she was cooking and caring for her immediate and extended family, her most cherished role. Always at the center of every holiday and celebration, Joyce was an accomplished cook and hostess who made every event special. She was the nucleus of our family and will be greatly missed. Joyce also was predeceased by her sister, Florence Tibbs Fey, her brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Charles Johnson, Jr. and Shirley Kohlmaier Johnson, and her beloved nephew, Dr. David Tibbs.

Joyce is survived by her nieces, Dr. Judith Johnson (Andy Salmon) and Cheryl Simon (Raymond), her great nephews and niece, Graham Simon (Lauren), Austin Simon, Alexander Davis, and Dr. Madeline Davis, and many cousins and godchildren she adored. As a family friend once said of her, “Imagine what a wonderful world it would be if every child had an Aunt Joyce.”

The family would like to thank the truly wonderful caregivers at Lake Villa House, and also Georgette, Kendra, and Monique, for their compassion, care, and kindness.
