October 25, 1927 – July 31, 2018 John Stephen Lanier, Jr., 90, peacefully went to meet his Lord July 31, 2018. Preceded in death by his parents, Alice Dupont Lanier and John Stephen Lanier, Sr. and his sister, Hope Lanier Singleton and brother-in-law Rodric Singleton, Jr, and cousins, Grace Muller McGittigan and Michael McGittigan. Survived by his devoted wife of nearly 68 years, Florence Roche, and four cherished children, John Stephen Lanier III (Dr. Pam Mitchell), Darné Brue (Darryl), Michelle Powell (Doug) and Lance Lanier, 13 adored grandchildren and 14 precious great-grandchildren and a host of much loved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Steve was born in New Orleans and remained in the area except for a brief time in Louisville. A graduate of Audubon Elementary and Fortier High School and studied Mathematics at Tulane University. Corporal in U.S. Marine Corps., Served 10 years as Asst. Scout Master of Boy Scouts Troop 21 New Orleans. Owner of Crest Supply, employee of Southern Water Heater, G.E., R. J. Marchand & Co., and Gertrude Gardner Realtors. Active in Greater New Orleans Home Builders Assn., Founding member of Lakeside Country Club. Current member of Divine Mercy Catholic Church and previous member of St. Angela Merici Catholic Church, special member of Men’s Club at St. Catherine of Siena.
His gentle advice and love bestowed on others is a rich inheritance to be treasured by all fortunate to know Steve. “Chief” made friends everywhere he went by making people feel special and valued. He was always glad to help others. He loved life and lived it to the fullest and encouraged others to do the same. Echoes of “Hey, Sugar” and his booming voice forever will warm the hearts of all touched by his exuberant personality. He travelled extensively and dearly loved sailing, fishing (proud to catch 42 lb redfish and 7 lb trout!), inventing, Mardi Gras and family.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at Greenwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5200 Canal Blvd., New Orleans, on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 12:30 PM. Visitation will be prior to mass from 9:30am to 12:30 PM. Graveside services will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations would be appreciated to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital Memorial and Honor Gifts P. O.
