Hunter Owen Wagner, Jr. passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, June 21, 2022. He was born in New Orleans on July 12, 1930, to Hunter O. Wagner, Sr. and Anna Nathalie Napp Wagner. He was a graduate of New Orleans Academy and Tulane University where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War as a commissioned officer. He spent most of his career in investment and commercial banking. He served as Louisiana Commissioner of Financial Institutions, Interim Louisiana Commissioner of Insurance, and retired from Greater New Orleans Expressway Commission as General Manager in 2000. He was a leader in the community and enjoyed serving on several boards and civic organizations and was Director Emeritus of St Tammany Parish Federal Credit Union. Previous service includes board member of the Bank of Commerce in St. Francisville; President of Audubon Federal Savings and Loan Association as liquidator; Federal Savings and Loan Insurance Corporation’s State of Louisiana Manager for Liquidations; board member for the Federal Financial Exam Council in Washington D.C.; board member for the Magnolia Foundation and Magnolia School Board; and volunteer for Odyssey Hospice and Visiting Pet Program.

Hunter was a connector of people and teller of stories, with a memory for people, names, and events non pareil. Hunter unabashedly believed in living life to the fullest. He enjoyed fine food, fine whiskey, and most of all his family and numerous friends. Hunter had a big laugh, a big smile, and a big heart and he never met a stranger. He freely shared his vast knowledge and valuable insight with many. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.

His loving wife, Julia Gill Wagner, to whom he was married for 69 years, survives him. He is also survived by his children, Robert O. Wagner (Stacy), Honie Wagner Smith (Jim), and Sharon Wagner Wolfson (Neil); grandchildren Nichole Wagner Dupre (Ruben), Kristin Wolfson Perez (Leander), Austin Wolfson (Tiffany) and Zane Wagner; great grandchildren Alexandra Dupre and Leander Perez, V.

Hunter received excellent care by Home Instead and St. Tammany Hospice, for which the family is eternally grateful. Visitation will be held at St. Joseph Abbey Church on July 16, 2022, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will commence at 2:00 p.m. Inurnment will follow in St. Joseph Abbey Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Hunter Wagner, to Padre Pio Foundation of America, 463 Main St. Cromwell, Ct. 06416 or a charity of your choice.
