Gayle Ernst Salvatore

Gayle Ernst Salvatore passed away on April 21, 2018 at the age 84.  Beloved wife of the late Michael Marion Salvatore for 63 years, predeceased by her father Edward Archibald Ernst, and her mother Josephine Besse Ernst.  She is survived by daughters Elizabeth Ann Salvatore (Morgan Gerald Earnest II) and Cynthia Salvatore Meurer (Kevin Jon), also by 7 grandchildren: Brooke Leigh Earnest, Arden Elizabeth Earnest, Aubrey Ann Earnest, Ashley Nicole Earnest, Katherine Elizabeth Meurer, Kevin Michael Meurer, and Jennifer Ann Meurer. A proud native of New Orleans, Gayle attended St. Rose De Lima and then St. Joseph Academy.  She graduated from Loyola University with a BA in education,
Nichols State University with a Master's in education, University of Southern  Mississippi with a Master's in Library Science, University of New Orleans with a Doctorate in Education Administration.  She worked as a librarian at Vanderbilt High School in Houma, Brother Martin High School in New Orleans, taught library science at the University of Southern Mississippi,  and she came out of retirement to be the librarian at St. James Catholic School in Sewickley, PA. During her tenure as a teacher, she served as president of the New Orleans Catholic Library Association and was a board member of the International Catholic Library Association. She was a Fulbright Scholar that spent six weeks in China to study their education system.  She was also an evaluator with the Southern Association of Secondary Schools and in her spare time she wrote a cookbook for the Catholic Library Association. After her retirement she enjoyed spending time with family, heirloom sewing, and her favorite pastime, reading.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the wake and service at Greenwood Funeral Home, 5200 Canal Blvd. New Orleans, La  Viewing from 12:30-2:00pm and the Service 2:00pm on Wednesday, May 2, 2018. Interment will follow at St. Patricks #1. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to The Recalled by Love Foundation, a 501c3 Salvatore Family Charity
