Guidelines for Catholics
Important Information Regarding Cremation
and
Words of Remembrance
Archbishop Gregory Aymond and the office of Worship for the Archdiocese of New Orleans have issued a new resources brochure for the Catholic community. The brochure attempts to address questions and concerns of grieving families. Two topics are addressed. The first is cremation as it relates to the Catholic Church. It spells out the options that are available and what is acceptable or not permitted by the church. The Archbishop encourages all parishioners to become familiar with church teachings before making a decision. He stresses reverence and respect for the cremated remains just as with the human body.
The second topic discussed is Words of Remembrance in the Catholic Funeral Rite. He points out that Words of Remembrance are not the same as an eulogy. The focus for the Words of Remembrance is on the faith of the individual. Appropriate times for speaking these words are suggested. The archbishop encourages families to work with their priest, deacon and other parish collaborators in parish ministry, in planning the funeral rite for their loved ones. He concludes by offering ongoing support and God’s consolation to all who are grieving.
The brochure is available at Greenwood Funeral Home. You may come by and pick one up any time. We would also be on hand to answer any questions you may have.
